Guatapé Antioquia

Although it is only approximately two hours from Medellín, visiting the town of Guatapé is almost mandatory. This place is famous for being the most colorful in Colombia and has several points of interest. El Peñol is a very quiet and familiar place, we can appreciate a great view of the reservoir.

The Piedra del Peñol is a huge 220 meter rock that emerged from the earth millions of years ago. The name given to these rocks is Monoliths. Similar formations in the world like this one are the Cerro Pan de Azúcar in Rio de Janeiro and the Zuma rock in Nigeria.

The view of the reservoir is unique and almost the same as that of Guatavita in Cundinamarca, towns that were relocated to flood this area and create the dam that controls the cause of the Nare River. This place is also known for being the epicenter of water activities such as traditional boat rides and jet skis.

Guatapé is the most colorful town in Colombia. This place is famous for its handicrafts and the baseboards of its houses, although many prefer to hire the motorcycle taxi service to get to know the town, in our opinion it is more worth visiting on foot. It is not a very big town, so you can visit it in two or three.

The replica of the Antiguo Peñol is a sample of what it was like before it was flooded and turned into a reservoir. You can find the best desserts and crafts here. This is a tour that you can do in less than an hour.

Temple of the Peñol. This temple draws a lot of attention, since it is a church built almost inside a rock that refers to the Peñol stone and it remains ten minutes before reaching Guatapé.
